Pre-Marital / Pre-Commitment Counselling

Written by Sofia Daulat

Historically, premarital counselling has been understood as a marriage preparation process, typically encouraged for those who are a part of a church or religious community.  As time has passed, counselling before making a lifetime commitment, has shifted into something meaningful and empowering for couples. This type of counselling is not only a proactive process to creating a healthy foundation, but a powerful tool that will shape and strengthen one of the biggest commitments you make in your life. Research has shown that couples who engage in premarital counselling, have increased relationship satisfaction over the span of their relationship.

Your therapist will draw from the research and evidence-based Gottman Method, to go through specific topics targeted at proactively strengthening your relationship. You can expect to develop a deeper understanding of the relationship you share and feel equipped with practical tools to use in the years to come. The following topics may be covered during the counselling process:

  • Exploration of family of origin

  • Stress management and self-care

  • Communication and conflict

  • Emotional engagement

  • Values and spirituality

  • Finances and money

  • Sex and romance

  • Rituals of connection

  • Roles, goals, and life dreams

When you are ready to take that first step, we are here for you. Our couples counsellor Sofia Daulat engages in a twelve-session process, which includes a thorough assessment process which gives insight into your strengths and areas of growth in your relationship.
